Presenter Biographies

Robert Black, MD is the Chairman and Edgar Berman Professor in the Department of International Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.  His research and professional interests focus on reducing mortality in children, including new vaccines to prevent childhood infectious diseases, and nutritional interventions to reduce infectious disease morbidity and mortality.  Dr. Black is involved with the implementation and evaluation of disease control and nutrition programs in developing countries. Jennifer Bryce, EdD is Senior Scientist in the Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.  Her research interests include evaluation methods of public health policies and programs that address maternal and child health. Return to presentations

Laura Caulfield, PhD is Professor and Director of the Center for Human Nutrition in the Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.  Her research interests include the role of nutrition in poor pregnancy outcomes, the consequences of early nutrition on neonates and infants, and nutrition surveillance systems. Gary Darmstadt, MD is Associate Professor and Director of the International Center for Advancing Neonatal Health in the Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His research is aimed at improving prevention, detection and management of serious infections in neonates; and promoting these care practices and management of illness in the home and community in developing countries. Rana Hajjeh, MD is Professor in the Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, a Medical Officer at the National Centers for Disease Prevention and Control and Director of the Hib Initiative.  Dr. Hajjeh’s research interests include the epidemiology of infectious disease and disease surveillance networks. Orin Levine, PhD is Associate Professor in the Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Executive Director of PneumoADIP.  Dr. Levine’s research interests include the epidemiology, control and prevention of infectious disease, as well as the development and introduction of Hib and Pneumococcus vaccines into routine immunization programs. Renée Van de Weerdt, MD is UNICEF Headquarters’ senior advisor for child survival.  Dr. Van de Weerdt has worked with UNICEF’s Darfur program, with the WHO polio eradication program, on complex emergency situations in DRC and Angola, and with Médecins Sans Frontières. Return to presentations
